[AMRadio] What is the cost of pore & foam packaging?

Doug, et.al.,
I have used UPS foam-in-place packaging many times, with never a single
problem. However, I have only done this up
to a weight of about 20 lbs, and never with really delicate stuff. I think
that the last thing I shipped was an old Globe Scout
and it went from MN to NC with no problem.
By the way, this is not a cheap way to package, because
if you use a double box, they have to foam both, and that gets pricey. I
think that Globe Scout, which weighed about 20 lbs.
cost about $18 to package and then shipping was on top of that. That was
only a single box packing job.
The radio arrived perfectly, however. I've been told that really large or
heavy things have had problems. Also, sensitive things
need to be packaged even better, because the foam can actually transmit
shock more than absorb it for a delicate piece of
gear. Tubes should be pulled and packed separate, and heavy iron...power
xfmrs and mod xfmrs should be pulled and
packaged separately. I received a beautifully packed Viking Valiant that
UPS dropped and it was almost destroyed. Had
the power xfmr come loose, and I've see that happen, it can roll around
inside and just destroy everything. Take care.
NOTICE: Be aware that ANYONE except UPS themselves, at their counter, is an
agent of UPS and NOT UPS themselves.
I say this because if you do have damage to a shipment that was not packaged
directly by the UPS shipping office, then
all the claim work has to be done through MBX or whomever, and it takes
FOREVER to get satisfaction...believe me, I've
been there. I shipped a laptop via UPS from MBX and it took almost a year
to get my money, as they fought over who was
to blame for the damage, packaging (which I thought was pretty good) and all
that. BE WARNED...if you're going to use
foam packing, get it done right at the UPS office.
Just my $.02, FWIW.

Guys, has anyone used a common carrier (like Mailboxes, UPS, or etc) to
pack and ship a heavy radio using the pore and foam techniques? In the
not too distant future I want to start advertising my heavy iron and
need an economical way to have someone else pack and ship. Thanks, Doug
