Thanks to all who responded with my question on what type of glue to
use. I had several suggestions.
It looks as though the plastic on the coil is not Plexiglas or lexan but
maybe polystyrene as Don had suggested. I ended up cutting some new
strips of lexan and used some epoxy to glue them to the coil. The coil
still had the polystyrene separators attached to the coil. I cleaned it
with acetone first. Also cleaned the new lexan strips with acetone too.
Also I cut a grove in the new strips for the coil separators to fit down
into. Did that on the milling machine.
By the way acetone slightly dissolves the lexan but it did not alter the
polystyrene (if that is what it is) at all. Acetone takes all grease
off the surfaces to be glued.
I first tried some of the epoxy on one of the old polystyrene pieces and
the new lexan. They stuck together pretty good. One I was able to break
apart and another I was not able to break apart. I had also tried the
same thing with silicon sealer that is made for boat use but it did not
hold well at all.
The epoxy is curing now. Should know in a day or two how it holds.
Also to clean up the silver plated parts of the coil I use some silver
jewelry cleaner made by "connoisseur". It is a liquid made to dip
jewelry in. I used a cotton ball and rubbed it on the coil. It cleaned
up to just like new! The stuff is amazing. The coil was very nasty. Had
years of dirt and corrosion from being wet. It was almost a matter of
just wiping it on and the coil would shine. Very little rubbing
involved. Washed it off with water. If you try it don't skimp on the
cleaner liquid. The more you use the easier the dirt and corrosion comes
off. The stuff says to "only use on sterling silver"
