Don and AMers,

WD40 was not the one that had DMSO. Since it says only 'petro distillates'
there is probably nothing 'manufactured' in it. But it is a judicious
choice of ingredients from the electronics point of view. For cleaning
carbon and wire pots, switches and contacts it has no equal.

A few years ago a very expensive gel was touted as being the ne plus
ultra for precious contacts. Turned out to be a scam which resulted in
contacts being actually destroyed. Not so WD40 which I've used to restore
carbon pots that are still in use after 30 years.

An HT37 came to me with the front panel festooned with Dymo Labels, the
kind that leave a working replica of the original message on the panel
after you manage to peel off the label. Pathetic. I used WD40 on balls of
cotton and a very gentle circular motion. Plus lots of time. But
eventually it all came off leaving a pristine grey panel that is
indistiguishable from new. After a dozen years it is still perfect.

WD40 is excellent for displacing water from spark wires and distributor
caps, car door locks, etc. It is a good penetrant especially when you
follow up with a thicker oil. But for busting rusted bolts there are much
better products although in many such cases nothing beats the oxy/acet
torch.

>I tried several electronic cleaners on the noisy af gain pot of my 75A-4.
