You might be surprised Jeff.
Very often it is HARD to sell the larger older rigs because there is a limited market
for them. Quite often a Valiant or DX-100 will sit a LONG time before anyone buys
it. Most guys do not want to ship them. It is not at all unusual for a GK400 or
GK500 to sit for a long time waiting to be sold, especially at hamfests. There just is
not a huge number of people waiting to buy them. Even Rangers, apparently now
the latest rig with the Midas touch.... I have seen them in nice condition going for
$50.00 at hamfests within the last few years. Most guys just pass right by. I had no
room in the car whatsoever.
It was them or one of the kids!
If someone is patient they can buy a Ranger in good working condition
for $125.00, but not on eBay and not a lot of other places.
As someone else has said, it's all in the eye of the beholder. Something is only
"worth" what someone was willing to pay for it.
In this case the Ranger must have been extra nice to go for $500 or $600.00.
Perhaps it was an unbuilt kit, hi hi!
