Boomer,

The V70d was a very good tube, lower voltage, lots of power
out for the size.

You can replace them with 8005 tubes, although I think you
have to change the filament voltage.

V70d tubes are still available, but likely very expensive
compared to hamfest prices.

I think AES listed them.

You could also plug in 811a, or 812a tubes, and run slightly
lower power output.

Bruce, WA3JVJ has one (GK400) and runs about 320 watts
carrier, and the darn thing can get well over 1500 watts
pep out of the rig.
He has 3 or 4 modulators with it, 3 modified globe
mod decks and a push pull parallel 805 deck.

Since he likes good sounding audio, I think he basically
scrapped the mod decks and just used the basics.

I built my own GK 400.
I used kilowatt plug in coils, big iron, a very large
spaced plate tuning cap, and modulate it with 811a tubes.
The rf deck runs 811a or 812a tubes, the v70d would give more
power out, but has a different filament voltage I think.

Maybe someday I will change out the filament transformer
and buy some v70d tubes.
That would get me another 50 watts or more I think,
and allow me to run almost any tube, 811, 812, 8005, V70d.

Looking inside Bruce's rig, I can not believe he does not arc
things over.
He runs higher voltages I think, yet the VERY small
plate tuning cap holds up, even at excessive pep levels!

He excites the thing with a Collins 310b, and what with the
audio processing stuff, the globe stuff, the modulators,
etc, it takes up 3 rack cabinets he calls the wall of sound....
