Your right. The mike element does match the input impedance to the
internal amp. but there's too much output gain, output impedance mismatch
to the Apache and now one more "gain" control. It's relatively simple to
change from amplified to unamplified D104 on the terminal strip under the
bottom cover. If your creative, you can add a simple dpdt toggle or slide
switch on the bottom cover to switch from amplified to unamplified 
action.
