I'm looking for suggestions for getting an original Alinco DX-70 repaired. I'm
not averse to sending it to Alinco if they will still support such an old rig,
but I'd like to hear other suggestions, if they might be faster or cheaper or
otherwise considered better.
My DX-70 has relay problems -- initially just on 6 meters, sometimes after
transmitting the receive gain would be down, as if the relay was not making a
good connection in receive mode. Just blipping the PTT or sending a dit usually
cured that, so I decided I could live with it.
However, suddenly another relay problem has developed. I hear spontaneous
irregular clicking while operating on HF, initially it didn't seem to affect
received signal but soon it got worse and received signals are way down. Also,
I'm not getting any output power. I speculate this may not be just one set of
relay contacts, it may be something wrong in the circuits that drive the relays.
I bought this rig new 12 years ago, when Radio Shack was selling them at a
bargain price, and I really like it -- I've used it on many Field Days and
trips, and as both a home and mobile rig. I like its simplicity of operation,
which has made it an excellent rig for my club's Field Day GOTA station. I would
like to get it professionally repaired and get another 12 years out of it.
