[Alinco] Modified VHF/UHF rigs

I've got a DX70 that is opened-up to 0-30MHz. (I did it when 5MHz came
along). I also have a car that does 140mph, but I have the wisdom not to.
I passed a test for my ham licence. I know what frequencies I am and am not
allowed to use, and I don't need the ones that I am not allowed to use to be
locked-out to make me 'conform'.
If I were to hear a desperate 'SOS' or similar on a frequency that my
licence does not cover, I will gladly answer it and face the music later.

Subject: [Alinco] Modified VHF/UHF rigs

Here is a question I have been discussing with another local ham, and one
that has us puzzled. I would guess that maybe 5% of hams are involved in
MARS or CAP (that is probably a high estimate). So why is it that 80% of
the used VHF/UHF rigs and HTs have been modified for wide band transmit?
Are there really that many freebanders out there?
