2024 Parade Theme Honors Washington's Connection to Alexandria

The theme of the 2024 George Washington Birthday Parade to be held Monday, February 19, 2024 will be “George Washington: Alexandria’s Original Living Legend”, in honor of Alexandria’s 275th Anniversary. The parade will return to its historic route east of Washington Street. Parade registration will begin soon, so watch your email!

Living Legends of Alexandria to be Parade Grand Marshals

The Grand Marshals of the 2024 Parade will be the Living Legends of Alexandria, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and chronicling individuals who have made significant contributions to the quality of life in Alexandria.  “It’s fitting that in the year of Alexandria’s 275th Anniversary, the Parade honors not only Washington’s close connection to his adopted hometown, but also the remarkable individuals whose vision and hard work over the years have helped make Alexandria the unique and vibrant community it is today,” says GWBCC Chair Sue Johnson.

George Washington Fun Fact

Alexandrian John Fitzgerald, an aide de camp to General Washington in the Battle of Princeton, shielded his eyes with his hat in dread after Washington led a counter-attack of his troops that ended with a volley of musket fire with the British at close range. But as the smoke cleared, he saw the British retreating and Washington unscathed on his stallion. Fitzgerald raced up to Washington, exclaiming “Thank God! Your excellency is safe!” To which Washington replied, “Away, my dear colonel, and bring up the troops - the day is our own!”
