W4HFH NET REPORT: 08Jan26

2M Net

Great discussion among 16 amateur radio operators tonight including a couple of new voices. Signals were great for the most part and the repeater performed flawlessly. We heard topics ranging from QRM isolation to Winter Field Day to the Net Control Calendar. We heard that Bjourn, KC3AOO, had contacted French Polynesia on FT8 and that Skip, KO2THF, isolated the multiple sources of QRM in his shack. We heard from Rich, KD3CHI, in Silver Spring using his new external antenna with his mobile rig although he was suffering a few dropouts from some level of interference / signal disruption. We heard that Larry, KQ4SBC, passed his General exam last weekend over in Arlington CONGRATS! Well Done! and when John, KD3BGT, heard that Aaron’s grandmother was able to talk to Aaron’S grandfather while he was deployed to Antarctica via Amateur Radio and that Aaron actually found a picture of his grandfather operating his rig with his call sign displayed, the discussion really got going. Aaron now holds that same call sign! We learned from John, W3SU, that there is a resource out there at Archives.com with a special subsection for old amateur radio call signs and I believe it’s called the Digital Library of Amateur Radio Calls (DLARC). Interested? Let the research begin and report back!

We heard from our most recent new members, Maitland, AA4HS a seasoned vet and we heard from K4DREE, Simadan, in Springfield and about his efforts to stand up an additional APRS beacon and plug some APRS holes south of the beltway.

I mentioned in my net notes about the VA Section Manager election underway and that one of the candidates is our own Mike Aimone so now you know where to put the “X” before you send your ballot in and lastly that 2026 is the Year of the Club where one of the activities allows that every club in every state will be offered 2 one-week timeframes to get on the air and operate as W1AW. In my haste to get the info out, I had the wrong month for our first timeframe. It is March 11-17 and not April. Thanks to Jan for keeping me straight! The second window is 04-10 November. More news for follow on this from our ARRL Affiliate Club Coordinator, Mike Aimone.
