OK, I have a 4Runner as well.
If you think your new driver will be responsible enough, Diamond makes a
motorized mount that attaches to the luggage rack. You will need to buy
the antenna that does not need a ground plane, the model number escapes me.
I have one on one of my vehicles because I drove that vehicle to the METRO
garage on workdays. It's not as good as the Larsen NMO-270 on my 4Runner.
You might also look at an antenna that looks like a rubber duck with an NMO
mounts on the bottom. That is super flexible and it won't matter if your
new driver goes into a garage or drive-thru.
Yet another option might be a Compactenna. It's basically a helical
antenna. It's very stiff and I dont think they are super efficient. For
around town, they are probably OK, but i would go back to my regular
antenna if I were going on a road trip. I asked somebody who one what he v
thought of it and he said "it makes a great rain cap."
Hope this gives you some ideas.
