[Alexandria Radio Club Reflector] URGENT UPDATE: [Ares] PLEASE READ - Discussion of ham radio in Richmond this Thurs., 5/22

I think the task is that any “ARO” (amateur radio Operator) with some charisma or political capability that has free time to head down there to work with our elected leadership and be a government *of the people*, just reach out to Ben and coordinate. Also know you can’t represent ARES (or likely any club you are a member of, or CERT) without prior approval. I think Jacks’ email was just a friendly reminder of what we should all know already, don’t speak on behalf of organizations you don’t have authority or permission from.

While I’m just a simple EmComm guy who won’t even pretend to understand politics, I know the club was very invested in the legal change surrounding strobing yellow lights for ARES so when I got notified about this by several folks simultaneously I figured it would be worth passing along. I also know we have quite a few folks attempting to climb the political ladder on their own and that this would be a great opportunity to bump elbows with a state delegate while potentially having a huge impact on the ham community.

I think forwarding these emails are important for transparency and information sharing, I try to immediately forward all information I receive out to the club, since this is a community effort more so than an autocratic one, and decisions made in a vacuum without the clubs awareness are rarely good. I apologize if my actions rapidly disseminating new info caused confusion.

If anyone has any questions I’d recommend reaching out to Ben direct.

Read this multiple times and still not sure what the real task is or why we at the club level would even be informed of this appearance requirement. Sounds like an assignment for ARRL Division Director and / or the ARRL CEO.

However, her staff recently told me it will be discussed by the Housing Commission in Richmond on Thursday, 5/22 at 1pm. This is essentially a 'Working Group' that can put forth recommendations about legislation. The meeting will be held in the General Assembly Building Senate Room C (Room 311).

She asked if we can get someone who is a member of ARES to travel to Richmond, stating we really need someone from the emergency services to speak about that, as this is what the Housing Commission is most interested in.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the narrative regarding ham radio, public safety, and HOA overreach. Plus, a better version of her bill can be introduced in 2026, but we have to make an impression this Thursday to gain traction.
