Useful tip, thanks Ian.
And, being a rainy Saturday morning, I went through each of my RT applications and did just that. Most needed updates.
That resulted in a snowball effect on my day, so I decided to give a couple of my older radios some TLC.
I hadn’t updated my “foul weather” station in too long, so I added the ARC GMRS repeater to it. The radio is a Wouxun KG-950D I keep in one of my upstairs bedrooms. It has a good sized UPS on it and its antennas are a couple of Yagis I put up in my attic.
They’re both 2m/70cm Yagis. One points northward towards our club repeaters (more or less), AS WELL AS to my wife’s office. The other points west. I can reach the Bluemont repeater and W4IY on that one real well. Being in the attic, those antennas are pretty well sheltered from bad WX.
The northward one plays an important role in my COMMS DOWN plan. I can reach my wife at her office on that using GMRS or (TX only) 2 meter simplex. (She cannot lawfully TX.) As I said, it has a UPS, and that gives me about an hour of radio time, during which I can swap in a battery if need be.
I usually turn that radio on during major weather events, monitoring Bluemont and its SKYWARN nets. (Very helpful during thunderstorm season.)
In any case, thanks again for the tip, Ian. Always good to give my gaggle of radios the TLC they deserve.
Cheers,
