Interesting.  In my basic (Army) training, we learned "niner" because it might be confused with "five" on an iffy connection. At the same time we learned the international alphabet, and that we should say "say again," not "repeat" because "repeat" was the command to call in an artillery strike.

This was many, many, decades ago--but after the World War II era, I hasten to say. Funny how things change.

Ian discussed that &ldquo;niner&rdquo; was specifically an ICAO aviation instruction, and never intentionally adopted in amateur radio. It was useful during the war due to confusion between &ldquo;nine&rdquo; and the German &ldquo;nein&rdquo;.
