I had a great experience as a first-time volunteer examiner (VE) yesterday. I shared the following on the X, and thought I’d share it here. Perhaps there are others considering volunteering a bit of time as a VE. IMHO, it’s very much worth doing so.
Glad I did that! I just proctored an amateur radio exam for a local club. I know, yawn, right? Well, the class had 17 students, and 5 of them were ladies.
That, in and of itself, is pretty remarkable. It gets better.
Two of the ladies were a mother/daughter pair. The daughter is 10 years old and she was sitting for her General exam (2nd tier of 3 in amateur radio), along with her mom.
The mom passed just fine, but the daughter failed. She was very upset about it, but (like all students), we gave her a 2nd try with a different exam. I figured she'd say no, but she did not.
AND SHE PASSED! I walked out of the scoring room with her completed exam. She was staring at me with doubt, and I carry off a pretty believable dour look... I walked up to her slowly. (Dramatic effect, dontchaknow.) I looked up at her and said, "I'm impressed," and gave her a high five. It was a special moment for her that I'm glad I was there to share.
She floated out of the room with a well earned ear to ear grin. Well done, young lady. Rock on!
Cheers,
