Featured Topic: "Winlink Boot Camp- Getting Started" by Ken R. van Wyk,
K0RVW, in person

Ham Workshop Topic: Join the Winlink "Hand-on" Experience

Ken's presentation will cover the basics of Winlink and how to get started,
how to use Winlink with your radio, VARA/FM and VARA/HF with Winlink, and
all about Winlink Wednesday. Winlink provides a way to send and receive
email messages over radio frequencies and is particularly useful in
emergency and disaster scenarios where traditional communication
infrastructure, such as phone lines or internet access, may be disrupted or
overloaded. It is designed for use by licensed amateur radio operators and
authorized government and emergency communications organizations.

As of June 2023, Ken became an Extra Class ham. He has been running one of
the alternate NCS stations for Winlink Wednesday for several months, see
https://winlinkwednesday.net for details. Operating P2P, he has rotated
through a couple of different bands for the morning and evening P2P
sessions, but lately is mostly on 30 meters (10.143 MHz) with ARDOP P2P in
the morning, and on 20 meters (14.087 MHz)with VARA HF P2P in the evening.
By occupation, Ken is an IT security professional who focuses on operational
security, incident response, and software security and has worked for
universities, the U.S. Department of Defense, SAIC, and a few others. He is
also on the faculty at IANS Research and runs a consulting company, KRvW
Associates. His grandfather (ZS6QF and later ZS6R, but simply "Oupa" to
him) was an active amateur radio operator in South Africa in the 1950-1976
timeframe. His grandfather operated CW on 20 and 10 meters and had other
radio interests, but became a silent key in 1994. More about Ken's
grandfather is on QRZ.com.

During the Ham workshop session, club members will have an opportunity to
have "hands-on" experience with Winlink. Those interested in joining in the
hands-on session should bring their laptops, notebooks, or smartphones to
the workshop session. However, to in order to send/receive emails during the
workshop sessions, club members must have an activated Winlink account.

The activation process can be completed within a few hours or even minutes
if the necessary information is provided accurately and promptly. However,
the actual duration may vary and can take longer, especially during periods
of high demand or if additional verification steps are required. Please see
the attachment on how to register for a Winlink account.
