Subject: Invitation to Alexandria Radio Club Monthly Meeting on Friday,
January 13, 7:00 p.m.
Alexandria Radio Club is inviting you to the monthly meeting scheduled for
January 14th. This will be a hybrid meeting (in-person and via Zoom).
Time: January 13, 2023 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Featured Topic: Ham Radio Networking using AREDN Software by Orv Beach
(W6BI), an AREDN Ambassador
Orv Beach (W6BI) comes to us from Semi Valley, CA. He was first licensed in
1967 and became a CW enthusiast. He is a Navy veteran who became turned on
to RTTY while in the Navy. Today, much of his ham radio activity is
mentoring other hams on ham radio networking using AREDN software. He has
given over 60 presentations on AREDN to various groups, clubs and at ham
conventions. Along the way he worked his way up through various other
digital modes, and started working with ham radio networking in 2014. Orv
has helped deploy the newest digital radios in Ventura County and western
Los Angeles County forming an IP network. He's also active in coordinating
the build-out and maintenance of the wider network, which now spans from
Santa Barbara south to the Mexican border and east to Las Vegas, comprising
over 500 nodes, both on hilltops and at ham QTHs. Orv is a retired Linux
system administrator, an ARRL Santa Barbara Section Technical Specialist and
an AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) Ambassador, one of those who
promote ham radio networking through presentations about the software
developed by the AREDN team.
The AREDNR acronym stands for "Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network" and it
provides a way for Amateur Radio operators to create high-speed ad hoc Data
Networks for use in Emergency and service-oriented communications. For many
years amateur radio operators and their served agencies have relied on voice
transmissions for emergency or event communications. A typical
message-passing scenario involved conveying a voice message via a radio
operator who would manually copy it onto a standard ICS-213 form, that was
hand-delivered. In today's world of computers, digital transmission is more
commonly used. An AREDNR mesh network provides typical Internet or
intranet-type applications to people who need to communicate across a wide
area during an emergency or community event, although it is not intended for
connecting people to the Internet.
For social and other benefits of Alexandria Radio Club, Club members are
encouraged to attend in-person, if possible.
