I received a call earlier this evening from Elizabeth Bartosz, Doug
Rose's (AK4QY) XYL. She gave me the sad news that Doug had passed
away.

Some of you may remember Doug when he was a member of the Alexandria Radio Club.

The email below has information about the service and arrangements.

Rich, KA4GFY.

For longer (web? Or quaker meeting)

Douglas McLeod Rose died peacefully at home on the 9th of Feb. Born in
Montreal, Canada on 2/3/45, Douglas grew up in the era of Sputnik, and
believed in a world bigger than we live in. He believed in a world
full of science fiction and he got to turn some of it into reality.

As a boy, Douglas was fascinated by the work of his grandfather,
Nathan Floyd Vanderlipp, who designed airplanes, and accompanied him
on several work trips for Bellanca Aircraft Company. During that time,
Doug also developed his love of science fiction, and it inspired him
every day of his life. As he grew up, he attended Deerfield Academy
and enjoyed playing trumpet and rowing for the school team, never
ceasing in his passion for science.

When he graduated high school in ‘63, he chose to matriculate at Tufts
University, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in physics
in 1971. Widowed after being engaged to Elaine Chang, by 1968 he was
an engineer engaged in design and construction of an electronic system
for use in aircraft measurement of near infrared backgrounds due to
high altitude clouds. He actually rode his motorcycle to Woodstock,
which we know because he still complained 50 years later of the mud;
and was actually in San Francisco with a flower in his hair.

Life got more interesting from there with employment at Arthur D.
Little, Baird Atomic, Astronautical Research, and EG&G (under ‘Doc’
Edgerton). At the naval shipyard in Newport News, he recognized that
software would lead the future, and so he earned his computer science
MS from Union College in 1980. This led him to write simulation code
for the military. In the 90’s, he went on to teach ADA and C to
students at Brevard Community College.

His growing management skills took him to McDonnell-Douglas, Spaceport
Florida Authority, General Electric, Boeing, and other contractors for
NASA. He jumped to the Shuttle program as soon as he was able. Douglas
launched experimental rockets, Thor and Delta systems, and the Space
Shuttle. He was in charge of building a Titan solid rocket motor
storage facility in Titusville, FL.

His lifelong hobbies included ham radio (call sign AK4QY),
boatbuilding, woodworking, biking, hiking, sailing, photography,
supporting his wife, and raising his child. Side and interim jobs
sprang from his hobbies and included freelance celebrity photography,
designing and installing hydropower systems in Costa Rica, and crewing
yachts.

He met his wife, Elizabeth Bartosz, at his last computer consulting
job at CyTerra in 2002 and he adopted her child, Antigonus Rose. He
was a well beloved husband, father, uncle, and brother. He was
preceded in death by his father Raymond Gillis Rose of Houston, TX and
mother Doris Janet Vanderlipp of Cherry Valley, NY. He is survived by
his wife, Elizabeth Evangeline Bartosz; child Antigonus Rose; siblings
Nora Manley, Nate Manley, and Martin Manley; nieces Eva Manley and
Caitlin Cluff; and nephew Patrick Cluff.

There will be a viewing at the family home, 20500 Greenfield Rd,
Germantown, MD, from 4-7 pm on Thursday Feb 16. His memorial will be
held on Sunday Feb 19th at 2pm at Woodlawn Meeting, 8990 Woodlawn Rd,
Alexandria, VA 22309. In lieu of flowers friends may consider donation
to the American Friends Service Committee earmarked for Turkey/Syria
earthquake relief.
