Greetings fellow ARCsters,

For the past month or so, a few of us have been gathering on Monday nights at 8 PM for a short and very informal “digital net night”. I think of it as more of a digital sandbox, but what’s in a name?

For THIS MONDAY AT 8 PM, we’re likely to go with fldigi. For most newcomers to digital modes, fldigi is often the first tool they install. It’s basically a messaging tool and it’s a great way to “dip your toes” into the digital pool to see if that’s for you.

The idea is pretty simple, we gather on a VOICE group on Discord. Voice groups are like teleconferences. We pick a digital tool to discuss and one person shares his screen — another capability of voice groups on Discord — and describes the tool, how to configure it, any gotchas to avoid, and demonstrates its functionality a bit.

After that, others in the group will often experiment with the tool, often sharing message traffic over radio using the tool of the night. When one person is struggling, he may choose to share his own screen and show the problem, and the rest of the group chimes in with suggestions of things to try.

It’s a pretty simple self-help sort of small group that gathers. We’ve covered VarAC and JS8call already.

We’re hoping to get more people involved, of course. And we have some fun ideas for future sessions, like “expert tips”. But first, we want to get the participants up and running on several different digital tools.

We hope you’ll join us. Again, we meet Monday nights at 8 PM. Hop onto Discord — you do have a Discord account, right? — and pop into the “Digital-net-night” group. We’ll usually start there and then everyone logs into the VOICE group of the same name. Naturally, you’ll want a mic and speaker, but Discord makes that pretty easy. The voice quality is excellent, and it’s a lot like all of us sitting in the same room chatting.

Hope to see y’all there. 73 de K0RvW.

Cheers,

Ken van Wyk
