Brian,
You may be right. Many hams find more interest in other parts of the hobby. I DO listen to our repeaters and will answer if someone comes up on a repeater and drops his or her call sign. (This is like a CQ on VHF / UHF). For the last few weeks I have been in Florida and I find most of the repeaters here don't have a lot of traffic either.
One area to get more use out of VHF/UHF is the local set of nets. Most clubs have a net every week. Our's is on Thursday at 8PM on the `147.315 (+600KHz offset, PL 107.2). Arlington has a net on Tuesday evening at 7PM on the 145.47 (-600KHz PL102.2). There are many other nets in the area. You can also be surprised if you listen to the SIMPLEX CALLING CHANNELS (146.52, 223.5, 446.5)

Thanks for all the input. I’m trying and learning a lot. I’m guessing with all the smart tech these days people are more interested in pushing the envelope rather than just some small chit chat and the basics. I will keep pushing and trying. I’m super into this and I know it will take time to learn all the ins and outs.

The Alexandria radio club net on Thursday evenings has been a positive help and looking forward to checking in. Happy to be member.

I was able to join the Alexandria radio club NET last Thursday for the first time and first contact on the repeater but as much as I call since then it’s been silent. I’m pretty sure I got the offset and PL right but it’s been silent.
