Alexandria Radio Club is inviting you to a Tech-Talk via Zoom on October
29th. This is the third Tech-Talk in a series of talks to be held via Zoom
by Alexandria Radio Club. These topics are the results of a club survey
conducted this last spring with club members. All sessions are open to all
hams. These talks will be normally be conducted monthly on the 4th Friday.
The purpose of these sessions is to provide an opportunity for in-depth
conversations, including Q&A, on a variety of ham radio topics. This
follows up on ideas from club members desiring to build on their knowledge
of ham radio. It is also hoped that these sessions will build on club
mentoring efforts for our newest hams and will serve to promote their
continuing interest in club activities. Finally, it is hoped that these
sessions will lead to more interest in operator license upgrades enabled by
increased knowledge of ham radio.

This Tech Talk is scheduled as follows:

Topic: Alexandria Radio Tech-Talk on Digital Modes by Ed Bradshaw, W4EDF

Time: Oct 29, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Many club members have expressed interest in learning more about amateur
radio digital modes. This presentation will describe some digital mode
capabilities available to anyone with an SSB radio and a computer. Ed will
cover FT8 and software Terminal Node Controllers (TNCs) and how they can be
used for Winlink and APRS. He will also discuss APRS as more than just for
position reports and ways in which Technicians can communicate digitally
using UHF/VHF.

Ed has been a licensed Amateur Radio Operator since 2012. He has mainly
operate portable, mostly due to non-HOA QTH restrictions (space, trees,
QRM), which means QRP most of the time. Ed was the original pioneer for
getting Alexandria Radio Club into using digital modes (FT8) leading up to
and during Field Day 2019. Originally from north-central Pennsylvania, Ed
was a Marine Science Technician in the United States Coast Guard and served
from 1987-1995, during which he moved to the DC area.
