Subject: Invitation to Alexandria Radio Club Monthly Meeting via Zoom on
Friday, May 14
Alexandria Radio Club is inviting you to a scheduled monthly meeting via
Zoom.
Time: May 14, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Featured Topic: Antenna Tuners: When do you need one, and how do they work;
and other antenna matching techniques by Barry Feierman (K3EUI)
Thanks to Barry, some may recall that he gave an excellent presentation on
VNAs (Vector Network Analyzers) to our club last December. Barry was
licensed in 1958 (KN3EUI) as a teenager, and notes that his knowledge of
electronics was nil back then, but he could memorize hundreds of questions
and answers to pass FCC tests. He confides that it took him decades to
really understand radio concepts, which he would now like to share with
others. He is a retired physics teacher/professor with a background in
astrophysics. He loves to tinker with sound card digital modes and build and
test antennas. He is the net manager of the Pennsylvania NBEMS (EMCOMM) net
and active in ARES/RACES in Chester County PA. The PA NBEMS PEMA net meets
Sunday at 7:30 am and has grown to over 60 check-ins. Out-of-state
participants are welcome. Using FLDIGI, frequency is 3583.0 kHz USB / 1500
Hz Waterfall, the mode for initial call-up and check in is THOR 22 for
check-ins and then using MFSK32 or THOR 50×1 for traffic. Barry has
authored:
QST January 2018 - Join the FT8 Revolution, pp. 41-44
QST May 2019 - FT8 in the RTTY Roundup, pp. 62-63
His presentation abstract for the meeting follows:
Why antennas have reactance (phase errors) and how to correct
the situation with a "tuner" at the antenna, or in the shack.
Detailed discussions of how the tuner provides a conjugate
match, zeros out reactance, modifies impedance back to 50 ohms, and so the
tuner provides a "REFLECTION GAIN" to offset the antenna mis-match loss.
Antenna-feedline matching devices, including delta matching,
gamma matching, stub matching, etc.
