On March 12 at our next monthly club meeting the program will feature a presentation by Howard (WB2UZE) and Jim (W6JIM) of the Long Island CW Club.   With this note I am forwarding the kind of fun and excitement that goes on daily with CW in the Long island CW Club which, as of today, has over 1400 members, worldwide. One of the best things about CW is that even Technician Class operators can operate worldwide CW on HF, with a minimal investment.  Hope you enjoy the note.

Here is a first QSO for the LICW record books. Not only was this Andy's first CW QSO, it was his FIRST ever QSO.  Andy joined the Club on February 13....WOW!!

 

Wonderful and unique news Andy and attached is your very well deserved Certificate

 

Have a read below of how Andy jumped right in, had the QSO Protocol right by his side and did it all by himself.

Just wanted to pass along some good news.

At around 2PM today on 40 meters here in SE PA I was able to make my first official CW QSO.  If truth be known it was my first whatever QSO radio contact.

Having attended several of the clubs Zooms sessions I had finally gotten up the nerve to throw caution to the wind, stop my years of procrastination and try to get ‘On the Air’.

Over the past several days I had forced myself to at least try to see if I could make a contact but to no avail.

Earlier this afternoon having spent a half hour doing Rick’s (K8BMA) warm up sending exercises and with ‘cheat sheet’ in hand I thought I’d try again.

Doing a search thru the bands I had crossed over Wayne’s (WN8BLX)  cq at a speed rate I felt I could handle.  I replied to his call and was rewarded with a response.

My plan was to stay with the clubs ‘cheat sheet’ – a quick ‘in & out’.   Having gotten the essentials (RST, QTH, and Name) my best-laid strategy then went to heck.  Wayne kept me on-line with some easy going back and forth banter between us.  I think I might of even made his day by informing him he was my first official CW QSO contact.   Some 5-7 mins later I felt my adrenalin was starting to go into overdrive so I jumped back to the cheat sheet and was able to politely say my farewells and sign off.        

 

……. 525 miles (as the crow flies) on less power then a 100 watt light bulb – I’m still amazed! ….

So for you, and the many great Zoom hosts I’ve had a chance to meet so far and get help from ‘Thank You All’.
