Subject: [SEC-ARES] EMCOMM Pre-Presentation Discussion - What Antennas Do You Prefer for Emergency Operations?

EMCOMM Pre-Presentation Discussion (Held prior to the Thursday usually 30 minutes prior to program)

Topics 3/04/2021: What Antennas Do You Prefer for Emergency Operations?

-          VHF/UHF

- HF – Long Distance beyond 400 miles

     - Short Distance within 400 miles

Audience response included the following:

VHF/UHF

               Dual Band Verticals that have gain (Most popular)

               “J” Pole – standard and wire construction {Some team hang the from trees and structure by rope.}

               Half-Wave Verticals

5/8 Wave Verticals

Yagi/Beam (Distance station to repeaters & Simplex)

Comments Audience Emphasized:

* Gain Antennas should be considered for fixed locations, such as shelters.

* Gain Antennas should be considered for HTs, especially during shadowing, search & rescue, others

* Gain antennas & tripod supports for remote setups.

* Yagi/Beam useful if station is at distance realizing that location will have limited to no signal from back

* Amplifiers are useful assuming capable source power is available.

* 100 foot Lengths of Coax

* Simplex and Portable Repeaters are a useful tool

HF

               NVIS used for Short Distances within 400 miles {Sometimes need to experiment configurations}

               Inverted “L” wire –
