*For Immediate Release: June 19, 2021*

With a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning, the City of Alexandria
celebrated the completion of the replacement project for Station 203
located at 2801 Cameron Mills Road. The construction project began in
spring 2019, and first responders returned to the facility in March 2021.

“I am proud of this state-of-the-art facility, which will better support
modern fire and EMS apparatus, equipment, and operations, with capacity for
special service units,” said City Manager Mark Jinks. “This modernized
station is a sound investment in the safety of our community.”

The new station is a two-story structure, measuring approximately 15,000
square feet, and replaces the original station built in 1948. This
up-to-date facility is equipped with three operational bays to house a fire
engine, ladder truck, medic unit and all required personnel, including a
safety officer. Living quarters, kitchen and exercise amenities support up
to 12 staff who will live on-site during their 24-hour shifts.

“This project was made possible by the Alexandria Fire Department’s
unwavering commitment to providing the highest quality emergency response
for our community and the best accommodations for our first responders,”
said Fire/EMS Chief Corey Smedley. “We appreciate everyone involved in
completing this project and the community’s patience throughout the
construction process.”

Originally proposed as part of the City's Capital Improvement Program in
2006, the Station 203 project included construction of a temporary station,
new construction of the permanent station, and demolition and removal of
the previous and temporary stations.
