The era for one of the greatest marvels of the world has sadly come to an
end.  Arecibo has been a national scientific asset and icon for over 57
years; it has been featured in a number of films, including  "Contact" and
the James Bond film "Golden Eye." With early sponsorship by DOD, Arecibo
added a lot to our understanding of the ionosphere at a time when HF
communications, which relies on the ionosphere, was a mainstay for DOD
worldwide communications.  Ham radio benefited from that understanding, as
well.  In the past, Arecibo  has been damaged by a number of storms and has
had financial support problems, but it always recovered.   I visited the
site in 2014 and was awed by the enormity of the telescope structure, as
well as what I learned about its scientific contributions.
