This morning someone reminded me that the Apollo 11 mission was actually 51
years ago. I also realized very early this morning that my arithmetic was
off, and I replied "it was close." As I get older and older that seems to
happen more and more.

Subject: Apollo 11 - On the Moon, 50 Years Ago
During the Thursday night net, Pete (N2KFA) reminded us of Apollo 11 50th
Anniversary. I started thinking. At the time, I was a 25 -year old Second
Lieutenant in the United States Army stationed in the Horne of Africa with
U.S. Army STRATCOM supporting the recovery of Apollo 11 with HF
communications and very primitive SATCOM gear. It was so exciting, but I
can remember that I had fear. I could not stand the idea that my mission to
maintain communications for the recovery could fail, I had to succeed as
communications officer. We all had to succeed. It was July 1969. Amazing
how things have changed since then; we were one America, standing out and
leading the world.
