If the EMCOMM ham radio world had "BREAKING NEWS," this item would be it.
This new comparison shows that a relatively new software modem, VARA, can
deliver WINLINK HF radio email performance almost on par with very expensive
hardware modems that have dominated high-speed comparisons in the past.
This is important for a number of reasons. The most important reason is
that during an emergency or disaster, traffic thru-put on HF can be much
higher without the necessity of very expensive hardware modems that few hams
have. Another reason is that the length of time RMS relays are in use by a
single station can be reduced, allowing more stations to connect. This
development means that the currently used WINMOR and ARDOP HF protocols may
be soon be obsoleted because they have much slower transmission rates.
I first used VARA on June 30th when version 4.0 was released and found that
use with WINLINK Express was almost seamless. The new VARA modem cost me
$69.00. The setup was much simpler and faster than the setup for my SCS
hardware modem that cost a lot more. I was able to send emails using VARA
over my Yaesu FT-857D without a separate hardware TNC or sound card. As a
result, my PACTOR 3 modem may see little use in the future.
According to this new comparison study, VARA also crushed VHF packet
transmission speeds based on the AX25/FX25 protocols.
