Forwarded is severe thunderstorm watch issued by SKYWARN (WX4LWX). For our newly licensed hams, and those relatively new to amateur radio, SKYWARN is a program of the United States' National Weather Service. Its mission is to collect reports of localized severe weather. These reports are used to aid forecasters in issuing and verifying severe weather watches and warnings and to improve the forecasting and warning processes and the tools used to collect meteorological data.

Richard Morani (KW4UJ), our club treasurer, is with the leadership group of SKYWARN in this area, and many ham members of the Alexandria Radio Club have been trained as SKYWARN Spotters. When SKYWARN is activated, amateur radio operators report observed weather conditions to the SKYWARN network. To monitor SKYWARN activity in our area, tune your radio to VHF frequency 147.300 MHz when the network has been activated. There you will hear directed net procedures in use for weather information reporting.
