The only mask that has a high protection value for the wearer is the N95 
or n100 respirator.   Cloth masks are not meant as much to protect the 
wear as it is to protect others from your exhaled particulate.    Source 
control is more easily accomplished than is having everyone wear (and 
waste) N95 respirators which should be reserved for care givers, first 
responders, and people with very high risk to complications that must 
venture out for some reason.   Respirators only work if you are clean 
shaven and they are properly fit tested (or at least properly fit) to 
your face.   You need to ask your physician if should or can wear one 
especially if you have any chronic respiratory illness - as they are a 
negative pressure device.

Studies show that with persons wearing 2 layer cloth face covers of any 
type, the risk of persons around you becoming exposed dropped 
dramatically at 3-6 feet.
