[Alexandria Radio Club Reflector] 82-4-24 Operator to give full time and attention to driving

I lived in Japan for three years where hands-free operation is illegal regardless of the radio service. Everyone there used boom mics with switches to activate and deactivate transmit. In my opinion, it was much safer than what we have here. Not that I believe what we do here is inherently unsafe if the operator is diligent about maintaining attention to the primary task at hand.

Just like in flying, aviate, navigate, communicate. As long as you prioritize the task that can kill people (aviate, or drive in this case), it’s perfectly safe. That said, I have absolutely no objection to rules like Japan’s. That way we can operate while moving without tying up hands as well.

Just my $0.02.
