VWS members - I encourage everyone interested in Winlink ( https://winlink.org ) to participate in this Virginia wide Simulated Emergency Test (SET). It’s been going for a few years and it’s interactive meaning you receive and reply to simulated emergency messages from around the Commonwealth. It’s an excellent exercise and is a fantastic learning opportunity. If you have question about Winlink please ask. There are several VWS members that ate well versed in Winlink.

I have registered  (as a lone ham, but maybe we can turn this into a club wide secondary field day with a combined EMComm/Public Service Training event or maybe even a pre-game for Field Day -- Freshly minted or rusty hams especially)

The SET for this Winter will be held on January 18, 2020, beginning at
0800 and concluding at 1400 or 2:00 pm.  This will be based on a major
power grid failure that will affect both Appalachian Power and Dominion
Power.  The reason for this failure will be unknown at the time of the
exercise.  This will be 3 days into the outage.  That will mean that
cell tower batteries will have failed.  All hams will be operating on
simulated emergency power.  This means that all hams will have to have
available emergency power at their operational location.  This can be as
simple as a battery with a mower with an alternator to change the
battery.  All long haul traffic will be via Winlink and voice may be
used for the exchange of local traffic. You will not need to run off
emergency power but have it available.

registration form.  We are now accepting registrations for both hams
and agencies.  Participation is open to all hams, especially those 
interested
emergency communications.  No organizational affiliation or non-affiliation
is required.
