FYI...
The K4US repeater will not be available from approximately 10 am until
approximately noon tomorrow, July 14. We will be replacing the aging
Motorola repeater hardware with new Yaesu System Fusion hardware. You may
hear us on the air during this time period, but please refrain from using
the repeater unless we are specifically asking for test reports.
If all goes well, by tomorrow afternoon you will have the option to use
Yaesu's digital C4FM mode alongside analog FM. The new repeater will be
left in Automatic Mode Select (AMS) so it will remain completely functional
as an FM repeater. For those of you who do not have a System Fusion radio
and don't want to hear any data bursts from digital conversations going on,
the input CTCSS tone (141.3 Hz) will be added to the FM output, as well.
This will mean you can set your radio to require the CTCSS tone on receive
and you will not hear the digital conversation. Because AMS will be turned
on, when you key up the repeater using analog FM, the repeater and all
other System Fusion radios that were previously talking digitally will
automatically fall back to analog FM.
For those analog FM users nervous about how this will work, don't be. It's
extremely slick. For those users who will be utilizing the digital
capabilities, please keep your rigs in AMS mode so that when an FM user
keys up, everyone is on the same page. I will send out a more detailed
email about the repeater after the transition is made. I'm also open to
hosting a Q&A session on Google Hangouts or YouTube or something similar if
you'd like.
