Don,

      Great idea.  I think this is the weekend for IARU contest.  Lots of good DX.

A ham radio HF “hands-on” session will be held at Jefferson Manor Park this Sunday. Jefferson Manor Park is located at 2909 Farmington Drive, Alexandria, VA. The session will run from 8:30-1130 a.m. (Setup at 8:00 a.m.). If you plan to attend, please send me an email so there will be adequate resources available.

During our digital practice sessions a few people approached me wondering if it might be good idea to have Sunday morning sessions just to allow new members to practice or observe HF operations in action. It was suggested that such sessions might help with choices they may make on the purchase of HF radios. Following up on that idea, there will be HF gear at the park for those who are interested. I will be the control operator unless we have other club members with HF privileges present, which would allow more stations.

This weekend is the IARU (International Amateur Radio Union) HF World Championship. Since 1925, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) has been the watchdog and spokesman for the world Amateur Radio community. The IARU is a society of members around the world; the ARRL is the U.S. member. To allow some exploration of HF contesting, I will have one station setup to operate in this IARU contest. See links below for more details.

Someone also mentioned the idea of morning snacks or breakfast at the park, which is OK as well.

The weather looks good. Please remember that we have not rented the pavilion shelter; but we will use it as before, unless another group has rented it. If it is rented we would have to move to another area. However, from experience this would be quite unlikely on a Sunday morning.

By the end of next week we will have a firm grip on our FD class of operation based on digital modes capability preparation. Currently we are considering Class 7A, but it is possible that we may change to 6A based on the level of digital mode expertise we have developed. Class 6A would mean we will have one digital station, versus two stations for Class 7A.

We had a good practice day yesterday. Weather was good and we spent the morning in a productive fashion, see photos. Many thanks to those who participated in prep for Field Day 2019, and a special thanks to Ed Bradshaw for lending his expertise with digital modes. The next practice session will be on June 2nd, there will be no practice next weekend.

To Fio and Mike who personally spent time helping me to unravel my terribly raveled 160m antenna wire, thank you; and may the Force be with you!! With your help, when I returned to finish unraveling, it was all but complete. I was able to finish the job of cutting and measuring SWR for a ready-to-go 160m antenna. I found a reel at home and so it now has a home on a nice reel, thanks to lessons I relearned about very long wires.

The best access approach to the pavilion shelter seems to be from Dewey Dr, see satellite view. There is no advertised electricity, but there are AC outlets in the restrooms, see photos. If the ladies room is not in use, it would be easier to reach AC from there. There are good wire antenna tree supports around the shelter.

Subject: Digital Mode Session for 5/19 is a "GO"

The digital mode practice session is a “GO” on Sunday, May 19. All digital mode practice sessions will be held at Jefferson Manor Park, 8:00-1130 a.m. We have not rented the pavilion shelter, but we will be using it unless another group has rented it. In such a case we would have to move to another area. However, from experience this would be quite unlikely on a Sunday morning.

A YouTube video below should be helpful in picking up the essentials of WWJT-X and FT-8. Although FT-8 is very popular as a contest digital mode, it is not useful for emergency communications work. Since Fldigi is the free “go-to” software for emergency communications work using digital modes and can be used to earn 100 bonus points for message traffic on Field Day, it is included in the digital mode practice sessions. Two YouTube videos below provide some of the essentials.

The remaining sessions are scheduled for:

* May 19th

* May 26th - KI4D will be out of town

* June 2nd

If you plan to attend one of these sessions, please send me an email so that we can plan to have adequate resources available.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of the digital mode practice sessions is to develop a sufficient number of skilled operators on digital modes so

that digital mode stations can be added to the Field Day line-up for the first time. Since non-CW digital modes was added to ARRL Field Day as a

category, our club has not taken advantage of this new category of scoring, see attached graphic.

Another purpose of the sessions is to increase the number of opportunities for "hands-on" operating time for all participants, including those without

any prior operating experience.

By early June based on the level of club interest and capabilities a determination will be made about the extent of digital mode stations in Field Day this year.
