[Alexandria Radio Club Reflector] Digital Mode Session for 4/28 is Cancelled

Thanks for raising this point Ed. Yes, it is important for those who plan to attend a session on a given Sunday to send me an email letting me know, otherwise I won’t know. Since I have to do support planning for the event and make sure adequate equipment arrives on site, I don’t undertake these tasks unless I know people are coming. Coordination may also be required to make sure that adequate band captains or mentors are present to explain how-tos, and to answers that arise. Digital mode operating is very unlike SSB phone or even CW, and requires a different set of skills and knowledge set in my opinion. One of my concerns is that people may wait until the last session (s) and there won’t be enough time or resources to allow enough people to gain skill in operating. At which time we may have to curtail plans for Field Day digital operations because there are not enough skilled operators.

In any event, I plan to be at the park this Sunday. Nick (KK4ODQ) and I will be there building and testing the 160m antenna to be used on Field Day.

I'm sorry to hear this. Was I supposed to sign up or respond in another email to indicate I was going to attend? I had it on my calendar.

I think as long as we have commitment from 3 others for the 20m digital station on FD, we'll have plenty.

The Jefferson Manor Park 4/28 digital mode practice session is cancelled due
to insufficient turn-out. Cancellations with for weather or insufficient
turn-out will normally be announced on Fridays by email The remaining
sessions are scheduled for:

* May 5th
* May 12th
* May 19th
* May 26th
* June 2nd

All digital mode practice sessions will be held at Jefferson Manor Park,
8:00-1130 a.m. If you plan to attend one of these sessions, please send me
an email so that we can plan to have adequate resources available.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of the digital mode practice sessions
is to develop a sufficient number of skilled operators on digital modes so
that digital mode stations can be added to our Field Day line-up for the
first time. Since non-CW digital modes was added to ARRL Field Day as a
category, our club has not taken advantage of this new category of scoring,
see attached graphic.

Another purpose of the sessions is to increase the number of opportunities
for "hands-on" operating time for all participants, including those without
any prior operating experience.

By early June a determination will be made about whether there is sufficient
club interest and capabilities in digital modes to include digital mode
stations in Field Day this year.
