Increasingly more advanced ham gear is being produced in China and a lot of
it is on sale in the U.S. at inexpensive prices. The Baofeng series of
radios was an early example, and one can already find cheap Chinese built
linear amps and antenna analyzers on eBay that have impressive specs. A new
example is this 30-watt-out Elecraft KX-3 knockoff that is scheduled to be
released in August. For some hams this unit will likely be a lot more
affordable than the U.S. made KX-3, which is not inexpensive. Long term,
this trend may adversely affect U.S. ham gear innovation because inadequate
sales could lead to a reduction in funds needed for R&D to incorporate the
latest technology in ham gear.
