I realize this is off topic, but felt it important to get the word out

regarding something that just happened to me.

 

Last month my ARRL membership was up for renewal, so I went online and

renewed it.

 

This week,  I received an email from an "Effie Mangllara" at ARRL

headquarters in Newington (based on the ARRL email, mailing address &

phone numbers in the signature line) stating that she "could not process my

application because of an expired card".  I assumed that it had something

to do with my membership renewal, since that was the only recent ARRL

transaction,  but thought it a bit odd since I renewed online.

 

I'm in the habit of never providing financial information via email,  so I

called the number in the signature line.

 

It rang and rang and no one picked up. I tried a second time with the same

result.

 

I called the main ARRL number and and spoke to Kathy.  When I asked for

this Effie person....... you guessed it,  no such person.  The phone number

in the signature line was identical to many of the Newington numbers. I had

Kathy check the number - close,  but no such extension.

 

Someone is running a pretty sophisticated scam,  even going to the trouble

of putting together a fairly convincing signature line and ARRL email

address.

 

My guess is that they are getting member emails off some of the various

discussion groups, and sending the "unable to process your application" in

the hopes of getting some takers.

 

I've made HQ aware of the situation.

 

Wanted you all to be aware as well.
