I just saw the movie "Lincoln." It was a fantastic movie for a lot of reasons. But it also had fantastic authentic telegraphs, and several key scenes happened in the Whitehouse Telegraph Office. I really got a got a good idea of what it must have been like back then  to be a telegraph operator! And the antique telegraphs were works of art in brass and mahogany.
