Subject: [Alexandria Radio Club Reflector] Hal's new set of toys :-) KC4ZYP
Hi Everybody,
A couple of weeks ago I spent a nice part of my tax refund on a new set
of toys. It was also sort of a RU graduation present to myself. It's the
Yaesu FT-857D with the matching ATAS-120 Active Tuning Antenna System.
Since I had the money, I decided to buy the kind of radio and it's
matching automatic tuning antenna that I really wanted for mobile use.
I'll just use the ATAS-120 for HF& 6m. For now, I'm using a separate 70cm
antenna for the VHF/UHF antenna port for 70cm only, but I may get one
really good dual band 2m/70cm antenna with high gain instead.
So I could be on both HF and 2m, I may keep my Kenwood 271A 2m mobile &
it's 5/8 wave 2m antenna in & on the same car (2005 Hyundia Elantra)
along with my Yaesu FT-857D. That's unless, I sell the ADI AR147 2m
mobile that's in my 1999 Hyundia Accent. If I sell the ADI, the Kenwood
would go into my 1999 Accent. Then, I'd really want a good dual band
2m/70cm antenna for the FT-857D in order to use it's 2m & 70cm operation.
While driving up to Rock Gap State last weekend, I made my first two 20m
contacts. One was a special event station for a ham club in Saint Cloud,
MN and the other was with a guy in GA talking off of his extended
aluminum ladder with radials antenna that he set up. He seemed kind of
proud of it. Hum... Well, he was coming well when I talked with him. So,
I'm finally on HF and not just 10m. How sweet it is & to be General!
The Yeasu FT-857D should make finally a good all in one radio for me:
>From at least 40m HF with the ATAS-120, it goes up to 70cm & 2m. With
more antennas & switches, it could down to 160m. Anybody else with a
FT-857D? How do you like your's?
