Subject: [Alexandria Radio Club Reflector] Shuttle amateur payloads

Greetings,

For those of you who are AMSAT members the Nov/Dec
2006 issue of the Journal arrived today with my
Suitsat-1 and debris analysis article.

I also have been involved at work and as a HAM with
some of the recent, 21 Dec. 2006, deployed satellites
from the Shuttle, STS-116. I was able to get some
spin rate info to WB4APR (Bob) with in minutes of
release of RAFT/NMARS. He was concerned with possible
retarded antenna deployments with the torques from the
high spin rates.

The objects of interest to me especially at work are
the ANDE release (5 components). The two calibration
spheres (MAA and FCal) will be used for determining
atomic neutral densities in the thermosphere for
improving satellite drag models. MAA was stuck in its
cylinder initially but has apprently extricated itself
and all 5 are now flying independently.

Anyway if you are interested the U.S. Naval Academy
has a web page dedicated to the HAM parts of these
satellites. Check out the videos of the releases too.

73, Best of holidays.
