Interesting net today.
Initially, I was contacted by Glen - AL7JX, BO49dt who is 60 mi
south of me near Anchor Point. The surprise was copying him at S5
with my antenna pointed at Anchorage (az=50). QRZ.com gives az=193.8
degrees so the contact was made off the back of my array which was
not pointed exactly 180-degrees reciprocal to direct. We maintained
a QSO for an hour.
Later joined by:
KL7RHJ - Kenai who was able to have 2-way contact with Glen
KL4E - Eagle River who did not hear either station (well enough)
Also heard WL7AU and KL7FZ after net closed.
Note: see AL7JX photos on QRZ.com
He was running 45w with TS2000 to 13-element yagi
Yesterday he heard my comm check with Toby-KL2T working from Homer
Hospital thru 146.91 repeater. I got the repeater at S5 by pointing
my array at az=210 and running 100w FM. AL7JX copied my direct
signals at well over S9.
Glen promises to check in with SSB on 144.200 in future nets. He
could be very popular in the June 9/10 ARRL VHF Contest by providing
BO49 grid square.
Our experience today affirms my contention that 2m+ is very possible
much farther south than Kenai/Soldotna from Anch. We just need more
activity. My belief is that 2-way SSB/CW is possible at times with
Kodiak, Is. from Anch.
Reminder of June VHF Contest with Rover KL7BSC covering from BP40 to BP64.
