FYI
Alaska VHFers typically do not participate in "Sprint Contests", but
I thought maybe you might be interested in what they do in the lower-48 & HI:
Sprints are sponsored by Central States VHF Society and are
primarily "activity promotion". Central States started out in 1984
by sponsoring a VHF weekend get together that evolved into the
premier VHF+ enthusiasts Conference in North America (see the
Conference Schedule at: http://www.qsl.net/ak-vhf/ ).
They took over administering the Sprint Contests when ARRL decided to
no longer support them.
In particular I would point out the 6m Sprint on May 12/13. With
lots of activity in the lower-48 happens during the sporatic-E (Es)
season, chances of DX openings to AK are good.
Monitoring 50.100-50110 on CW and 50.125 on SSB might offer a chance
to work into the lower-48 states.
May-July is the "DX Season" for 6m. Es commonly open around 10am and
late afternoon-early evening (local time).
In fact monitoring 50.125 with a horizontal antenna pointed SE is a
good thing all the time to do to catch the rare and random
openings. One often can also work Japan to the west. or VK and ZL land.
A 6m dipole and 10w will work during one of these openings, though a
yagi and more power, helps a lot..
