I realize this is not a VHF topic but still significant ham radio
news. I have been a participant with the ARRL Experimental Group on
600m (495-510 KHz, recently expanded to 472-478 KHz). FCC approval
is announced in their Report and Order dated March 29, 2017. Final
approval remains so one cannot start ham radioo use at this point.
It will be restricted to General/Advanced/Extra licensees and one
must get give written notice to the Utility Telecom Council before
starting operation. RF power is limited to 5w EIRP which is typical
for small antennas in this frequency band using a 100w CW
transmitter. 472-479 KHz is a small band so narrow-band modes will
be desirable. probably no voice or wide-band digital. I will not go
thru the whole details; ARRL will likely make an announcement, soon
and one can read the R&O from the FCC for details. I will try to put
it on my website with link from main page under "600m" later today.
600m is much like 160m propagation but offers a lot of interest for
those interested in weak-signal work such as WSPR. I expect a lot of
articles and new books to be forthcoming on "getting on 630 meters".
My call for the ARRL Experimental Group is WD2XSH/45 - only usable
with a FCC experimental license in the US up to this point.
