[AK-VHF] NET 9am 146.52 FM

Because only NL7OW and KL7PW checked-in (KL6M checked-in at the very
end of the net) we never left 146.52 MHz FM. However, an interesting
proposal was made by NL7OW:

"instead of a formal net starting on 146.52 simplex and QSYing to
other frequencies/modes, Tom, NL7OW proposed that an area-wide 2m
repeater be used as the meeting place and for coordinating simplex skeds.

AS he envisions it, a net would be established on the area-wide 2m
repeater for one hour on one Saturday per month with check-ins with a
net control (e.g. KL7UW). The format would be similar to the
existing VHF-Up Net with the net being a roundtable discussion net.

The variation is that individual net members could arrange to QSY to
another frequency for the purpose of making simplex contacts (either
CW, SSB, FM, or digital modes). The members would self-moderate
communication on the simplex frequency (no formal net control). When
done making contacts stations could re-join the net running on the
repeater. Thus "simplex" operation could be coordinated via the
wide-area net on the repeater which would enable improved mutual contacts.

In lieu of simplex operation on other VHF/UHF bands, a net theme
could also be chosen for purpose of discussion via a roundtable
session. Topics would center on VHF/UHF "weak-signal" subjects or
activities thus overall the net would serve to encourage such activity.

In the past a similar idea was implemented using the AK IRLP network
once/month. This never materialized as a coordination net for
purposes of arranging "real-time" skeds using VHF/UHF weak-signal
methods. This was somewhat due to check-ins from outside the state
by individuals used to the Alaska "morning net" model. The concept
of a real-time VHF/UHF scheduling never materialized. Therefore, I
discontinued the IRLP Net a few months ago.

We will tentatively try-out NL7OW's concept on Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving
weekend) pending getting permission form a repeater owner for holding
such a net (KL7UW will seek permission).

Discussion on how the concept "works-out" in reality will be
discussed during the normal net to be held on Dec. 1 on 144.200 USB
as currently scheduled. If opinion is favorable to continue such a
net, I propose that the fourth Saturday be established for this mixed
repeater-simplex net.
