For those who have not yet upgraded to Amateur Extra Class license, here is an opportunity for structured guidance in studying to take the exam. Bruce, N7RR, said that the course is open to everyone. Now might be a good time to go for the big one.

Subject: [wwdxc] Amateur Extra Class Course in Western Washington

I assume that most WWDXC members are already Amateur Extra Class hams.  You may know of some Advanced or General Class hams who might be interested in upgrading.  If so, please pass along this information about the course:

Amateur Extra Class
Course Starting in January

Remember when you were studying for your General Class or
Advanced Class license?  It seemed like a
steep hill to climb.  Now that the
Advanced Class license is no longer available to new applicants, the climb to
Amateur Extra Class is even steeper.  Mountain climbers use a special technique for long, tough climbs:  it's called the rest step.  The rest step is a steady, slow technique
with carefully-calibrated pauses built into every step.  Getting to Extra is like that.  It takes some effort, but with a step-by-step
approach, the Amateur Extra Class license is well within the capability of any
General Class or Advanced Class amateur.

Formal classes for Amateur Extra Class are very hard to
find.  Such a course is finally coming in
January.  The basic course takes place at
your home:  on the internet and optionally
weekly on-the-air sessions (on the 75 m and 15 m bands).  Self-paced at-home instruction begins in early January
2012.  With a bit of effort - about 30
minutes of work each day - you'll succeed in becoming an Extra!

You must be a General Class or Advanced Class amateur to
join the program.  The cost for the
course, including the textbook, is $39.  You
pay the VEC fee separately wherever you take the exam.  If two people from the same household are
taking the course, you can share the textbook and only one fee is charged.  If you already own the Gordon West Extra
Class manual, the fee is only $14 and you can get started right away.

Please make out your check or money order payable to Bruce
Prior and mail it to Bruce Prior N7RR, 853 Alder Street, Blaine, WA  98230.  Be sure to include your name, callsign,
address, telephone number and email address.  It would be helpful if you could send an email to n7rr at mail.com as soon as your check is in the
mail.

Candidates can take the course from anywhere.  For those living in or close to Western Washington, there's icing on the cake.  We'll have face-to-face sessions in Bellingham WA
on one weekend in February - just before Valentine's Day.  If you can make it to Bellingham, send an email to n7rr at mail.com for more details.

A VEC exam is held on Sunday afternoon, February 12.  Following the exam, we'll hold a door-prize
drawing.  Only brand-new Extra Class
amateurs who passed the exam in that VEC session will be eligible for the
drawing.  So far we have four items for
the drawing:
1)      a
fancy ZN-9 dual-lever paddle from N3ZN.  See:
http://www.n3znkeys.com/keys.html.
2)      an
excellent iambic and keyboard keyer, logger and Morse trainer: the Begali CW
Machine. See: http://www.i2rtf.com/html/cw_machine.html
3)      a
Universal Keying Adapter 3 kit and cabinet from HamGadgets for use with tube transceivers and linear amplifiers http://www.hamgadgets.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=128
4)      a
Picokeyer Plus kit with an enhanced chip and cabinet from HamGadgets http://www.hamgadgets.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=89

We expect additional equipment donations for the drawing.
