I use a 3 ft long whip for a sense antenna while mobile on something quiet like 27/30 mhz area. Under the pole signal is 9+. Following a noisy line which is something like S2-5. These can vary depending on the strength of the source. Usually seeing anything over about 5 or so, I switch up to upper VHF and with a 3 element yagi and AM mode to be able to tell where to go from there.
Thank you - very useful information. Now checking my notes, I think there is one place that stands out of the noise sources. It is very strong, the closest one to me and exactly in the 6m beam heading. There are two houses there, so I can get close to the poles. After a trip like that, some kool-aid is needed to clear the head :-)
For that trip, I need to be prepared to do VHF. I think my handheld has the AM band that airplanes use, so that would be good. Need to hook up a small yagi to it. The rest of the potential places are such that I can't get there easily unless I start crawling under barbwire.
