The endless blind calling when the station is clearly gone and not listed on live stream is dumb.

There also another possible reason for endless calling. People set the transmit timeout for, say, 20 min and leave wsjtx calling (without being present). Wsjtx will keep calling even if the DX is long gone. Again, not the way to go but at least not as bad as logging DX when one can't hear it.
