Sometimes, I've found that if I think a station's timing is off on ft8/4, (like I start transmitting before he finishes), I will start a transmit cycle by pushing enable, and then push it again mid transmit and it will finish the transmit cycle, then I can listen a little longer past the receive cycle and if he's behind, it has time to catch the whole thing. When his signal is properly decoded, I double click on his and hit enable again to finish the cycle, rinse, wash, repeat so to speak to get to the RR73. Doesn't work all the time but sometimes it does...or it seems to on my end.

The reinstalled btk sync did work.  Coincidentally, the only signal on 24.912 is F4ANC and he is off by 1.4 sec. so I didn't think it was working. I went up to 24.915 and it's right on!
I have Iran on 15M SSB in 1979 and, more recently, 10M FT8, so this would have been a band counter.  Oh well.  I had more than my share of chances to get EP4HR!
