This completely blanked 40 meters
this morning, at least on the east coast. Steve, N4JQQ
Two days after an X-7.1 solar flare,
today at 12:18Z the sun produced an even greater X9.0 flare,
the second largest one of Solar Cycle 25. A G3 magnetic storm
is expected to start later today, probably lasting into
Friday. Then as that one subsides, the plasma from today's
X9.0 flare should arrive. This CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) was
from sunspot group 3842, which is presently in the center of
the sun and is directly facing the earth.
It looks like we may have clear
weather by Sunday. We will have a waxing crescent moon with
the moon setting around 7:30 PM, so we should have a dark sky
to observe what might be a nice aurora display.
Both of these flares may trigger 6
Meter TEP (Trans Equatorial Propagation) openings in the next
72 hours. Stay tuned!
