Motel 6 at $600/night! That's like Augusta during Masters week .... (well, not sure anymore with recent inflation)! But factor in the "roll of dice" on whether cloud cover will ruin the trip ... not for me. I can attest that it's not just out-of-staters. My younger neighbors (kids are college age) ... packed up everyone and the dogs, and headed out yesterday to London, AR to camp till Tuesday. Heck, I get tired building a campfire at home anymore, hihi!
Like I've said previously ... it IS quite an experience. Not quite out of body, but it ranks way up there on the list. I too need the A8 on 12m & 160m only ... so I'll be looking to work them right after you, Dennis.

I don’t know, Joel - the grocery stores here have already run out of milk and bread! It’s about like when the weatherman forecasts a 20% chance of snow.
All the little communities along the path have been going all out to attract all the tourists they can. I’m not sure that’s a good thing - they may go broke renting porta-potties. I hope they make a lot of money and those who paid over $600 for a room at the local Motel 6 get their moneys worth.
It should be a spectacle compared to daily life in Russellville. My job with the RACES unit is to do a lot of monitoring, which I do anyway. I dug out an old CB rig and I’ll listen to that, GMRS, and ham frequencies and report any calls for help or other unusual conditions. According to the “experts”, cell phone outages may occur at times, but nothing too major. As everyone fogs out of here afterwards, there should be some traffic slowdowns. It should be busy but not apocalyptic. I’ll probably work the A8 a couple of times, too. I need them on 12M as well as the low bands.

Aside from the solar event, the mass hysteria over the concern of crowd issues may turn out like Y2K….a BIG nothing. Like Dennis, I’ll be staying home and don’t plan to alter my daily schedule. The time of total darkness will be very close to my afternoon nap time, so a little darkness could be welcomed!!! 😊

Dennis, you are in an enviable QTH this coming Monday. I estimate you will get 4m-10secs of totality in the eclipse at your house!!! Heck, that's only 7 secs less than the centerline near your place. Staying home with a lawn chair and a big glass of iced tea sounds like a good plan. I have to drive over past Harrison to get into any of the total eclipse area. If weather is good, might do that. But I am pretty sure the traffic will be as epic as the event, hihi.
At least in 2017, we were returning from a East Coast trip and stopped for that eclipse in "Jonesboro" Illinois (thought that was appropriate). We were pretty close to centerline so got right at 2 minutes. But sparse enough with watchers that we were on the interstate heading south to MO/AR at full speed -- shortly after the show! Don't think Hwy 65/62 is gonna be quite as lucky.

I made a brief trip to town today and saw a lot of Texans headed into the area. We should have clear weather, and other areas have clouds predicted, so that means whatever we would have had, we will have more of it! Should be interesting. I’m staying home.
